Instruction1.Glossary: Cardiovascular/Respiratory- Due10/30/21 Provide 5 terms and their definitions from this week's material that you were previously unaware of or confused about. Explain why they interested you or ask a question of the instructor. 2. Anatomy & Physiology: Cardiovascular/Respiratory- Trace the path air takes during one full breath (inhalation to exhalation) or trace the path our blood takes during one full heartbeat. You may use words, pictures, videos, etc. Be as creative as you like. 3.CPR Analysis- "Hands-only" CPR is how most lay person's are currently trained to perform CPR. This just became available within the last decade. What do you think about doing only compressions and not breathing? If you have been trained in CPR was it in "hands-only" or traditional CPR? Why is "hands-only" CPR not effective on certain victims, such as an infant, a drowning victim, or a drug overdose? Minimum of 150 4.Connection to Environment: eCigarettes -Discussion Topic Adverse Effects of Vaping The current use of e-cigarettes is increasing daily, especially among teens. Five million minors, mostly in their high school years, reported that they had used e-cigarettes recently. About one-quarter of the nation’s high school students reported vaping within the last 30 days in this year’s annual FDA survey, up from 20 percent last year. This summer’s startling reports of vaping-related respiratory illnesses, which now near 500 cases in nearly three dozen states and have possible links to six deaths, have amplified concerns and renewed calls for a total ban on the largely unregulated pipeline of e-cigarette and cannabis vaping products. Read the articles below from the National Institutes of Health and the NY Times and answer the following questions:-NIH findings 2018- https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/health/trump-vaping.html 1. Do you think e-cigarette use is harmful to the cardiac/respiratory system? 2. What do you think about the increase in the use of "vaping" among teens? Please respond using at least 150 words 5.Project Part 1: Submit References Using the Harold C. Smith Learning Commons or the internet (I love this website: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/), find three (3) professional, peer-reviewed journal articles relating to one specific topic that relates to a "Contemporary Issue in Human Biology". This is a very broad topic but it will set you up for your final project. Basically, I am looking for any human biology topic that impacts us as a society (autism/vaccines, gene mapping, cloning, environmental issues, obesity, etc.). I do not want research strictly on what a topic is, I want to see the connection to today's world. Using APA formatting, provide the full reference for each article. Each article must be full text (not just the abstract), from a professional journal (in print or web based). NIH, NIDA, SAMHSA, and other government agencies will also be accepted. The citation must be in APA format. There is an APA Template listed in Course Resources that you can follow. If you are not sure how to do an APA reference, feel free to look in the Academic Resource Center on Brightspace, on Purdue OWL. Citefast is a free internet based program (www.citefast.com) that will also format the citation for you. Submit annotated bibliography for three professional/peer-reviewed articles for use in Final Project 6.Glossary: Endocrine System- Provide 5 terms and their definitions from this week's material that you were previously unaware of or confused about. Explain a little bit about why you chose these terms or ask a question of the instructor. 7.Connection to Environment: Stress The adrenal gland plays a very large role in our body's response to an environmental cue that leads to the "fight, flight, or freeze" response. When triggered, it releases epinephrine and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters) that lead to increased heart rate, breathing rate, cardiac muscle contractions, and blood glucose levels. It also releases cortisol, a hormone known to increase belly fat. The video describes stress as the "start of all disease processes" and recommends that everyone "build your own cave" to find a place to release the stress in our lives. Based on what you have learned so far, respond to these questions: 8.Connection to Environment: Mental Health Discussion Topic Ruling out hormone imbalances in a patient who presents with many mental health issues, especially ADHD, anxiety, and depression should always be a first step. Most physicians will order testing for thyroid levels (T3, T4, TSH) and levels of blood insulin. This is because an imbalance of these hormones can mimic several mental health diagnoses. In 150 words or more, explain how you think endocrine problems could mimic mental health problems. Be sure to respond to at least 2 peers in order to receive full credit for this post. What is your response to the statement that "stress is the start of all disease processes"? How do you "build your own cave"? Each response should be a minimum of 150 words.
