Copy and paste your research purpose statement and research question(s) at the beginning of this assignment. Make sure all the elements are aligned. You need to include the following sections in your assignment. Some of the elements are similar to what was done with the quantitative design. 1. A description of the context and participants What is the setting for the research? What should we know about this setting? Describe the characteristics of the research setting. What is the population? How many participants will you need/expect to have? What criteria will you use to select your participants (i.e., the sampling strategy)? Provide basic demographic information (e.g., gender and ethnicity group) to describe the proposed sample. Or state you will obtain relevant information later. Resources to consider: I highly encourage you to take a look at dissertations! These will provide some of the best descriptions of these sections. Check our sample proposals. A description of the research design When using a qualitative design, broadly describe what you hope to achieve by using this research strategy. Explain why qualitative methods are appropriate for this study. For example, you may want to discuss an interest of "going in depth" in order to explore more fully the participants and their experiences, or you may describe how this is a unique context that needs exploration. Do some reading on qualitative designs and include reference citations that would help you provide a rationale for why a qualitative design would be most appropriate to answer your research questions. What characteristics of qualitative research are appropriate to your research (Check Textbook page 180)? Select one qualitative approach from our textbook reading and make sure to describe that here as well, providing a rationale for why that specific design aligns with your research questions/purpose. Please select one of the five approaches discussed in the textbook (Ethnography, Narrative, Phenomenological, Grounded Theory and Case Study). 3. A description of the data sources For qualitative research, you should have a method to collect data about the central question and sub-questions, such as interview questions that address the focal area, observations that would observe the phenomenon or document and artifacts that would reflect the area. In qualitative research, it is common to have multiple data sources to address a topic, such as interviews and observations. At this beginning stage of your research design, however, it is okay to just have one method of data collection (e.g., interviews). For example, if you will use interviews, observations, or documents, who will be your sources of data? What will you want to know from these individuals? What will you look for in the observations? What will you look for in the documents? Please provide a few sample questions or items for interviews or observations, thus the instructor knows you can use the data resources to answer your research questions. Add an alignment table including research questions and data sources if you have multiple research questions and data resources. 4. A description of the procedures Describe how you plan to conduct your study. Include what you will do as the researcher and what the participants will do in the research. You may want to think about this as a timeline: What will you do first, next, third ... last. Be sure to describe how all of your data sources in the third section will be collected in your procedures. A basic description of each data resource is needed. 5. A description of the researcher’s role Describe your role in the study in a short paragraph. Make sure you address how you plan to deal with potential biases based on your role.
