InstructionRequirements: 1. Audience Analysis: Your paper should begin with a paragraph that provides an analysis of the intended audience of the ad you will analyze (see the sample rhetorical analysis for an example). Write a brief (approximately 50 words) analysis of the intended audience. In your analysis, you will need to discuss who the audience is based on where the ad is published, the purpose of the advertisement, and its use of rhetoric. The audience analysis should be a separate paragraph before the start of your paper. 2. Thesis: The thesis should argue how the advertisement uses rhetoric to portray a specific message to its intended audience. Review the sample rhetorical analyses in JC pp. 56-61 for help with drafting a thesis statement. Review “Chapter 4: Write a Rhetorical Analysis” in IC for help with drafting a rhetorical analysis. 3. Analysis: The bulk of your paper will consist of analysis. In each body paragraph, you should make a claim (which should be the topic sentence) that you support with several examples (one example per point is not enough; three should be a minimum) that you analyze. When making claims, keep your thesis in mind. I should be able to tell how and why each of your arguments relates to your thesis. 4. You may need to quote small passages from the article to use as evidence. When you do so, make sure to introduce the quotation (for example: As the advertisement notes, “Pantene works miracles…”) and put the quoted words in quotation marks. If you have questions about quoting, review the appropriate material in our textbook. 5. Your paper should also have an introduction that ends with your thesis and a conclusion that asserts what you have learned from conducting the analysis.
