Copy and paste your research purpose statement and research question(s) at the beginning of this assignment. Make sure all the elements are aligned. You need to include the following sections in your assignment: 1. A description of the context and participants What is the setting for the research? What should we know about this setting? Describe the characteristics of the research setting. What is the population of interest? How many participants will you need/expect to have? What criteria will you use to select your participants (i.e., the sampling strategy)? Provide basic demographic information (e.g., gender and ethnicity group) to describe the proposed sample. Or state you will obtain relevant information later. Resources to consider: I highly encourage you to take a look at previous dissertations –be sure you reshape this to your area. These will provide some of the best descriptions of these sections. 2. A description of the research design If you are using a quantitative method, then describe the intervention (i.e., what will you be manipulating -- the independent variable) if it is an experimental design. Make sure that you use random assignment in such designs. If there is some type of instructional unit as the intervention, be sure to describe that unit, noting how specific components of the instruction relate to your research questions and purpose. If there are multiple interventions, such as group 1 receives a treatment, group 2 receives a different treatment, and group 3 receives the control, be sure to explain each of the treatments/interventions. Specifically, be sure to describe carefully the use of control and experimental groups and which group(s) receive which types of intervention (True experimental design: interventions with random assignment of participants; Quasi-experimental design: interventions without random assignment of participants). If there is no intervention, you can go with: 1. Correlational studies – if you are more interested in the correlations among variables (e.g., relationship between SAT scores and undergraduate GPAs). 2. Causal-comparative studies – if you are more interested in the group differences that are already existed without manipulations (e.g., gender differences of behavioral problems). You may use a survey instrument in your study, but we do not treat survey design as a single method here. Please select from the three options listed above (Experimental Design, Correlational Studies, and Causal-comparative studies) depending on your research questions/purpose statements. A description of the data sources In quantitative research, specifically, you should have a method to measure each of the variables, such as with a test, a survey, and related demographic information. (e.g., If you are using a survey, describe that and what will be included in it. If you will be using an experimental intervention, how will you measure the intervention effect? Will you use a pretest and posttest for the difference?) Ideally, you can address the quality of your instrument(s) (i.e., validity and reliability), but it is not required for this assignment (it will be in your dissertation, however. Please provide detail information of data resources (e.g., purpose of an instrument and a few sample items) so the instructor knows the data resources can be used to answer the research questions. 4. A description of the procedures Describe how you plan to conduct your study. Include what you will do as the researcher and what the participants will do in the research. For instance, you need to describe your intervention procedures if you use experimental design. You may want to think about this as a timeline: What will you do first, next, third ... last. Be sure to describe how all your data sources described in the third section will be collected in your procedures. Optional: If you have time to read the chapter of analyzing and organizing data from surveys, you can add discussions of data analysis in the procedures. First, you need to describe the data resources using descriptive statistics. Then, you need to discuss the statistical test(s) that will be used in your study.
