Read the study under Week 1 student resources called “Experimental study (alcohol)”. This may be challenging as you may not be used to reading psychological journal articles from peer-reviewed journals. The purpose of this is not to learn every detail of the concepts investigated by this study, but rather to be able to pull out the important information about how the study was conducted in terms of design and methods. So you should focus on the Methods section of the study, particularly what the authors refer to as “Study 1”, when answering the questions below. These researchers did 2 studies as part of this investigation, and both are described and are interesting, but we will focus on the first one. (Note that when they say suboptimal, they mean subliminal) 1. What is the research design used in this study? (observational, survey, case study, correlational, or experiment) 2. What are the independent and dependent variables? 3. Describe the experimental and control groups (how did what they were exposed to vary?) 4. What did the researchers find in Study 1? 5. Was this surprising to you? 6. If you were interested in studying the relationship between alcohol use during pregnancy and risk of intellectual disability in children, what kind of study would you do? Briefly describe your design and why you chose it over the others.
