Assignment 8 In this assignment you will use an online Geographic Information System to create a map. Step 1 - Go to http://www.arcgis.com/features/ Step 2 - Click on sign in and create a ArcGIS public account (it's free). You will use this account again when you geocode. You can sign up for an account here as well - https://www.arcgis.com/home/signin.html Step 3 - Once signed in, explore the site. ArcGIS.com is a web based GIS platform that is designed for sharing maps. There are some featured maps on the home page. Open some of them and check them out. Step 4 - On the top of the page next to your user name on the right hand side there is a button for make a new map. Click on it to get a fresh map. You will create your own map here. Step 5 - Maps are created by taking a basemap, what you see on the screen and then overlaying them with layers of data. First you should choose your favorite basmap. Click on the Basemap button and choose one that interests you. Step 6 - Next you will add a layer, next to the basemap button you will find an add button. Click on it and choose add layer from the web. This will bring up a menu for searching. Search ArcGIS online for an interesting subject. There is just about any subject there. When you find one of interest click the add button. Step 7 - Add additional layers if you wish. You will be able to turn on and off layers in the table of contents. After you add the layer zoom and pan to the extent of the map that you want to show. As soon as you are happy with the map you made go hit the print button. Step 8 - The print button will make a windows ready for you to print. Print this as a pdf, or save the map as a pdf. Email the PDF to me. If you are not able to print a PDF from your computer, then click the share button, and submit a link to you map.
