Select a newspaper article (hard copy or open-source online) that uses mathematics in the report. Use the Critical Literacy and Critical Questioning Framework (Stack & Watson, 2010) to dissect the article. Identify the mathematics information and discuss issues related to how the mathematics is used within the context of the article. Draw attention to information not included in the article that you need to understand better the claims made, from the both mathematics and context perspectives. Please upload a Word document. Make sure your assessment task has a copy of the news article as an appendix or has a URL from where the article can be sourced. Review the details below before submitting your final version for assessment. Check the spelling, phrasing of sentences, and paragraph structures to eliminate minor errors that detract from the communication of ideas. The news article selected needs to use mathematical information in some way. The article may be using big numbers to illustrate the extent of a problem, or percent to show the impact on a particular community, or graphs to show the variation of the problem experienced over time, or ratios to show a survival rate, or averages to summarise results and compare with different groups, or survey results to prove a point. You will need to read the article to identify how the mathematics is being used. The mathematics you identify may vary from the ones listed here. Until the Critical Numeracy and Critical Questioning Model is explained and applied in tutorials, ask yourself the following four questions when reading an article: "What is the mathematics and the mathematical terminology used?" "How is the mathematics and the mathematical terminology related to the context of the report?" "How has the mathematics or mathematical terminology being used to convey meaning or used to persuade the reader to believe the claims made in the report?" "What else do I need to know or find out to be convinced the report is to be believed?" The article can be published in newspapers (hard copy or online), or news blogs - source of article must be referenced appropriately. An article can be up-to-date, recent or older. Recent articles will be easier to source but if you have newspapers in the shed that date back a number of years, you are welcome to find articles from them as well. News articles unpacked using the Critical Numeracy and Critical Questioning Model in lectures or tutorials cannot be used in the work submitted for Assessment Task 1. Format of Assessment Task 1 Assessment Task 1 should be written in essay-style. The use of a formal essay structure will not be assessed but there is the expectation that you use correct grammar, complete paragraphs, and proper sentences that are free from spelling errors to tell a story that flows logically and coherently to convey the ideas required. You may structure your assessment task according to the sections of the Critical Numeracy and Critical Questioning Model but that is not a requirement. It may be necessary to put ideas together in a different order or combine ideas in different sections to tell a complex story about the news article selected. The important thing is that all sections of the Critical Numeracy and Critical Questioning Framework should be included in some way. A completed proforma is not the format for AT1. The proforma is a graphic organsier.
