Yes, I do believe individuals considered to be psychopaths should be criminally liable for their crimes and receive appropriate services to help rehabilitate by providing individualized plans that best meet their needs while serving their sentences. Rehabilitation for psychopaths individuals is controversial as it has been determined that this is not considered a mental illness but a personality disorder that people are born with not like sociopaths who are made or develop sociopathic tendencies over time. Psychopaths in detainment can often be managed with reward based treatment but cannot be rehabilitated or “cured”. Especially since Psychopathy is considered to be a personality disorder, the emotional deficits would definitely need to be considered when determining punishment or preferably treatment which would need to be very different from the non-psychopaths treatment options. Juvenile psychopaths on the other hand have been known to show results in specific treatments that resulted in a much lower recidivism rate when compared to psychopaths in traditional therapy and those who received no therapy. Disadvantages to non-psychopathic therapy or none at all is the higher rate of recidivism as compared to psychopathic specific management strategies.
