In your research paper, you will weave together information which you have gleaned from reading the story as well as from researching literary criticism on your author and story. This assignment has two parts: reading the short story and then writing the paper. To write this paper you must first make an argument about the story, and second, you must situate that argument within recent criticism on the text. How have other critics read the story in question? What can you add to those readings? While you will research the literary criticism available on your story, do not think of this as a “report” on what the critics have said. Craft an argument about the work, one that engages with other critics as a way of sharpening a particular point. To make your point you will use criticism that agrees with your perspective and successfully argue against relevant criticism that attacks your perspective. The length of the text of the final copy (not including the final Works Cited page) is to be no less than seven pages and no more than ten pages – typewritten, double-spaced. Please number all pages consecutively (including page one). Page numbers should be placed in the top, right-hand corner (MLA format). Where to find resources: Everything you need is available online. The structure of the research paper, in principle, is identical to the structure of your first two essays; the difference is that it is longer, more detailed, and incorporates the research you have found on your story. Here is a sample, suggested structure. IMPORTANT: This is a suggested structure intended for those of you who might be a bit uncertain about how to proceed. It is expected that most of you will draw from your experience with the English 101 research paper (as well as other assignments for other previous classes) to develop this paper. Also, although I mention support from research for each item below, that doesn't necessarily mean you will draw from your research for each section. Just find places where appropriate to insert your research as a way of adding further support to your discussion.
