Some examples of classification instruments used to determine the correctional sanctions or place for a juvenile are the severity of the offense, past criminal activity, and past placements and adjudications. The classifications instruments work by assessing the individual to see the likelihood of future delinquency and what the effective needs will be for intervention and treatment. A positive change while a juvenile is in a secure confinement can be measured through tracking his or her discipline in their treatment or rehabilitation programs. The behavior of the offender can also be measured. The way he or she is applying themselves in their programs and how that are treating staff and other offenders. Most juveniles who are process end up son some type of probation to protect society while the interest of the child is at best. Shock probation and school-bases probation are correctional strategy's that an offender could be put on. Incarceration is the best option when the juvenile when the public is in harm because of the offender, when the minor has committed a heinous crime, or when they have on going offenses. When an offender has a mental disorder or a substance abuse disorder is when other correctional alternatives are more appropriate. In my opinion, home confinement is a correctional strategy I feel is ineffective. Taking an offender away from the area where they most likely commit the crimes is the first step to rehabilitating them. Also, taking them away from some people can help in that process as well. Placement in a facility with the correct programs and treatment can have a more positive effect on him or her.
