InstructionWriter Ray Raman from the website Healthline discusses how genetically modified organisms, GMOs, are the subject of controversy. Some scientists believe they are harmful for human consumption; however, it has not been proven because GMOs have only been in use since 1994. Cotton was the first genetically modified crop, but not an issue since humans do not consume it. However, GMOs are now consumed by livestock and poultry, which becomes part of the food chain. This is where the controversy occurs. Is it safe for humans to consume GMO products? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), GMO seeds are used to plant over 90% of all maize (corn), cotton, and soy grown in the United States, which means that many of the world's foods likely contain GMOs. Although most notable organizations and research suggest that GMO foods are safe and sustainable, some experts and sources claim they may harm human health and the environment. Bill Nye, who was once an opponent of GMOs changed his opinion of GMOs in 2015. He believes they are necessary for large food production and are not harmful to heatlh.
