Status: Completed
For this assignment, you can choose to write about how the reader can increase their own motivation (option 1 below) OR how the reader can increase the motivation of others (like employees, students, children). You will choose only one option from the choices below and then write all 3 of your strategies for your one choice. Whichever option you choose, give your assignment a title that reflects your choice (e.g., “3 strategies to boost your motivation”). rubric details APA, emperical based, accurate, gives the reader the advice, shows evidence for the strategies being effective

Instruction
• o Here are some options: 1. How to boost your motivation (this is the most common choice) 2. How to end bad habits 3. How to motivate your children 4. How to motivate your employees o If you want, you can keep it general like the options from the list above, OR you can make it more specific to one task such as: • How to motivate your child to read • How to motivate your employees to exercise o If your idea for a title is something different than what’s listed above, ask me first. • Each strategy must be backed by science. Do not base your strategies on your own intuition or observation and do not use theories that are not supported by research (so no Freud, no Maslow, etc.). If you’re unsure whether a strategy is supported by research, ask me first. Do not base your strategies from readings we haven’t covered in class—each strategy must come directly from our readings.

  • The purpose of this assignment is for you to use 3 empirically-based strategies to achieve a short-term goal of your choice. Requirements Your goal must be approved by me via email by the date indicated on the syllabus. If you don’t get my approval, there are no consequences per se, but you risk doing the project wrong. See ideas below if you’re stuck. Use at least 3 science-based strategies we’ve covered in class to help reach your goal. No matter which 3 strategies you use, make sure they come from our readings and you must use all 3 strategies during the same time period.
    User_11524 | Jun 14, 2021, 19:26 PM
  • This is a similar idea to the strategies assignment. You can use the same 3 strategies you used for your strategies assignment (IF they are appropriate for your goal… not all strategies we’ve discussed will work for this project). Make sure, however, that you are looking at the feedback I gave you for your strategies so you don’t use a strategy that isn’t appropriate. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes in your goal project that you made in your strategies assignment. Collect relevant data on your goal progress for at least 5 days. (We know from the Silva reading that collecting data on a goal is helpful, but you may NOT include this as one of your 3 strategies since it’s built into the assignment.)
    User_11524 | Jun 14, 2021, 19:26 PM
  • deas for goals and data collection Goal: use your phone less. Data collection: record the number of hours per day spent on your phone using the screentime tracker. Goal: get more sleep. Data collection: record the number of hours you slept per night (you can use a fitbit or your phone or something like that for objective data collection). Goal: drink more water. Data collection: record the number of ounces of water you drank every day for 5 days.
    User_11524 | Jun 14, 2021, 19:27 PM
  • Goals NOT suitable for this project Get into medical school. This is too broad and there is no daily data to collect. Instead, your goal could be to study for the MCAT 1 hour per day. Travel to 30 countries before turning 30. You can’t do this in 5 days. Improve my self-esteem. This is pretty vague and you probably can’t collect data on it. Instead, maybe your goal is to do a self-esteem meditation for 20 minutes per day for 5 days. Grading
    User_11524 | Jun 14, 2021, 19:28 PM
  • Grading There is no length or word requirement, but the more detail you give me, the better your assignment will be. Make sure you elaborate on each of your answers. You may only quote one sentence total in your entire assignment. You will receive a 10% deduction if you quote more than one sentence. You will be graded on completeness, accuracy, writing quality, and APA style.

Forming implementation intentions goes beyond intending to reach a goal. While goal intentions have the structure of ‘‘I intend to reach X!’’ with X relating to a desired future behavior or outcome, implementation intentions link criti- cal situational cues with instrumental goal-directed responses: ‘‘If situation Y is encountered, then I will per- form the goal-directed response Z!’’ this is in one of the paperMotiv Emot (2014) 38:305–322 DOI 10.1007/s11031-014-9416-3 ORIGINAL PAPER Weakness of the will: Is a quick fix possible? I need to feel like writing.” This barrier is cruel because it is half-true. We all have moments when we feel inspired—we lose sense of time, the sentences tumble out, and what we write, as F. Scott Fitzgerald (1955) eloquently put it, is “good, good, good” (p. 7)."

  • please please please follow instructions use only my class this is what she said "It’s fine to use self-determination theory as a strategy and operant conditioning as a strategy " again its 5 sentences for each strategy we propose
    User_11524 | Jun 17, 2021, 05:32 AM
  • Self-determination theory The three basic psychological needs are: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. • Competence = feeling effective in your environment • Autonomy = feeling like you get to make your own choices • Relatedness = feeling a sense of belonging This theory focuses on how you can increase someone else’s intrinsic motivation by supporting someone’s basic needs. If you are a boss, teacher, parent, coach, etc., the Roth (2019) reading has strategies that you can do to support your employee/student/child to increase their intrinsic motivation. Do NOT use self-determination theory as a means to increase your own motivation (it’s not meant for that). Only use it as a means to increase someone else’s motivation.

  • Operant conditioning Students often confuse the 4 types of operant conditioning. Negative reinforcement is NOT a bad thing and it is NOT a type of punishment. • Negative = taking something away (does NOT mean bad) • Positive = adding something (does NOT mean good) • Reinforcement = rewarding a behavior so it will increase • Punishment = punishing a behavior so it will decrease Positive reinforcement • Adding something pleasant as a reward to increase a behavior. • Example: giving a dog a treat as a reward for sitting. Negative reinforcement • Taking away something unpleasant as a reward to increase a behavior. • Example: taking away a child’s chores as a reward for getting good grades. Positive punishment • Adding something unpleasant to decrease a behavior. • Example: shocking a dog as a punishment for barking.
    User_11524 | Jun 17, 2021, 05:39 AM
  • Negative punishment • Taking away something pleasant to decrease a behavior. • Example: taking away a child’s TV privileges for getting bad grades. Need more help with operant conditioning? Click here Silva’s reading on excuses, scheduling, tracking progress. A common mistake is that sometimes students will think that anything to do with scheduling is supported by Silva’s reading, but that’s not the case. Silva focused specifically on allotting time for a task that you don’t spend enough time on.

  • Silva’s reading on excuses, scheduling, tracking progress. A common mistake is that sometimes students will think that anything to do with scheduling is supported by Silva’s reading, but that’s not the case. Silva focused specifically on allotting time for a task that you don’t spend enough time on. Examples: • Want to meditate daily? Allot time to do it (e.g., every day from 9–9:15am). • Want to exercise more? Allot time to do it (e.g., Monday–Thursday from 6:30–8pm). • Want to study more? Allot time to do it (e.g., Tuesday–Thursday from 12–2pm).

  • Implementation intentions Not all if-then statements are implementation intentions. Implementation intentions are specifically if-then statements about how you’re going to implement your goal. Think of it this way: implementation intentions are your intention of how you will implement your goal. They connect a specific situational cue to a specific goal-directed action. Situational cues are anticipated scenarios, obstacles, circumstances, etc. that you may find yourself in. They are written in this format: “If [this situation] happens, then I will do [this goal-directed action].”
    User_11524 | Jun 17, 2021, 05:43 AM
  • • “If I get off work early, then I will study until the time my shift would have ended.” o This IS an implementation intention. It connects a situational cue (getting off work early) to a specific action (studying until your workday ends). • “If the UMBC library is closed when I get to campus, I will study at the public library.” o This IS an implementation intention. It connects a situational cue (the library possibly being closed) to a specific action (studying at a different location).

Assigned goals by a manager, for exam- ple, are as effective as self-set or participa- tively set goals if they are accompanied by logic or a rationale from a manager. Why are goals so effective?

  • High goals lead to greater effort, focus and persistence than moderately difficult or easy goals. This is true for such diverse groups as loggers, engi- neers, scientists, entrepreneurs, professors and students. It is also true for unionized hourly workers. Moreover, a high goal makes self-satisfaction, one’s judgment of one’s success, contingent upon a higher level of performance than the attainment of an easy goal. People with high self-efficacy set their goals high, because they are not satis- fied with less.

  • GARY P. LATHAM INTRODUCTION: GOAL SETTING THEORY The beauty of a well-developed theory in the behavioral sciences is that it provides a fra- mework for scientists to conduct research. The findings from these studies provide a framework to predict, understand and influ- ence our own actions and the actions of others. For example, more than 1,000 studies conducted by behavioral scientists on more than 88 different tasks, involving more than 40,000 male and female participants in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, show that specific high goals are effective in sig- nificantly increasing a person’s performance – regardless of the method by which they are set. Assigned goals by a manager, for exam- ple, are as effective as self-set or participa- tively set goals if they are accompanied by logic or a rationale from a manager. Why are goals so effective? A goal is a level of performance proficiency that we wish to attain, usually within a specified time period.

You must write at least 5 sentences for each strategy. For each strategy, you must refer to the readings from class in your description/explanation. you did not define it

  • etting theory comes from the Latham and Locke reading. Also, the quote you included doesn't have anything to do with goal setting theory. You also didn't include any evidence to support this strategy. The Latham and Locke reading covered many many studies with specific evidence and we talked about lots of evidence for goal setting theory in class. Strategy 2: The strategy to use operant conditioning through positive reinforcement is a good idea, but your writing is all over the place. You cited Maslow, but Maslow has nothing to do with operant conditioning and the instructions specifically said not to use Maslow.
    User_11524 | Jun 19, 2021, 18:07 PM
  • Further, Maslow didn't say anything about job satisfaction or intrinsic motivation, so I'm not sure why you cited him there. You then talk about classical conditioning and Pavlov, but classical and operant conditioning are distinct concepts--- classical conditioning has nothing to do with praising employees. You also did not cite any evidence here. There was evidence in the reading: rats learned to press levers to receive food because the food is a reinforcement that maintains the behavior of pressing a lever.
    User_11524 | Jun 19, 2021, 18:07 PM
  • Strategy 3: The evidence you cited doesn't come from the self-efficacy reading. I also don't understand why you included a 4th strategy, especially since it has nothing to do with what we talked about in class. Overall: -- You were missing many components required by the instructions. -- You did not define key terms for the reader. -- You did not provide specific evidence to support your strategies. -- Your writing is very unclear. I highly suggest you contact the writing center to improve your writing skills. Your assignment is very very difficult to understand because of the way it's written.

In my extensive history of working on students’ assignments, I have learned one thing: Each assignment must be custom-made and should stand on its own merits. No essay will ever reach its full potential if it’s being worked on by a disinterested person. I have written thousands of assignments and most clients have come back to appreciate me for good result. Given chance, I will do my best to produce an A++ assignment.
