Instruction1. Read the excerpt from Herodotus's History on Egypt and the Egyptians. Herodotus is considered the first historian, known as the Father of History; unlike other very early historians (Thucydides, for example), he does not cover just history, but discusses geography, culture, etc. as well ... and he is not above including hearsay and gossip/rumor (which is why he is also called the Father of Lies). Herodotus covers a number of elements in this excerpt; for example, history, geography, culture, division of labor between men and women, customs, religion... etc. Choose one area and summarize Herodotus' statements in at least one paragraph. Staying with the area you chose, in a second paragraph (or set of paragraphs), analyze Herodotus' statements. Do they fit in with what we have been studying? Do they fit in with what we have learned about Egypt this semester? Can you detect a bias on the part of this Greek, writing about a country with markedly different customs, etc.? As always, the more effort you put into extra credit the more extra credit you will earn. You are allowed to use outside research sources for this assignment, in addition to course materials and your own knowledge. Use MLA formatting, including a Works Cited page, and in-line/in-text citations. Failure to do this is plagiarism, and will earn 0 points. 2. Read Enheduanna's Hymn to Inanna, and do a journal entry. The answer to each question must be at least 50 words, and each answer must be in its own paragraph, numbered according to the question. 1. What do you think of the hymn? 2. Did the hymn help you to understand the Akkadian people, culture and religion? Why? Why not? 3. What do you think of the way the hymn describes Inanna, compared to any of the psalms, hymns, prayers, etc., that you are familiar with from any other religion? Name the religion, the hymn (or prayer, psalm, etc.), and discuss similarities and differences. 4. Inanna features prominently in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Compare how she and her actions are described in the Epic and this hymn. 5. If you could say one thing, or ask one question of Enheduanna, what would it be? The journal entries are a way for you to engage more deeply with the readings and the cultures we are studying. I prefer that you not use outside resources, but if you do, you must include an informal citation (author, title, page #, URL, webpage, etc.) in parentheses, MLA style (in-line/in-text). Failure to do this is plagiarism and will earn 0 points. The answers to 3 and 4 must be substantially more than just 50 words, FYI. ##3. After you've watched the video about this poem Ludlul Ben Nemeqi, and read the poem, do a journal entry. The answer to each question must be at least 50 words. Each answer should be in a separate paragraph, numbered according to the questions. 1. What did you think about the poem? 2. Did the poem help you to understand the Babylonian people, religion, and culture? Why? Why not? 3. If you are familiar with the story of Job in the Old Testament, compare this poem to that. How are they different? How are they similar? (If you're not familiar with the Book of Job, here is a link: https://biblescripture.net/Job.html (Links to an external site.)). 4. What is taken away from the author of the poem? In other words, when his god turns away from him, what does he lose? 5. What are Marduk's capabilities, according to the first part of the poem (Tablet 1)? 6. How does compare with the Poem of the Righteous Sufferer? How is it similar? How is it different? What do you think might account for those similarities and differences? 7. If you could ask one thing of the poet, or tell him one thing, what would it be? I prefer that you not use outside research sources, but if you do, you must use an informal citation (author, title, page #, URL, webpage, etc.), in parentheses, MLA style (in-line/in-text). Failure to do this is plagiarism, and will earn 0 points. ##4. Read the excerpt from Plutarch's Parallel Lives biography of Mark Antony. Write at least one paragraph discussing how Plutarch portrays Cleopatra as Antony's ruin. For example, how does Antony's own character allow (according to Plutarch) Cleopatra to exercise such influence over him? How does his passion for her lead him to lose the love and trust of the Roman people? Write at least one paragraph discussing how Octavian uses Antony's relationship with Cleopatra to exacerbate the suspicions of the Roman people to justify attacking him. Write at least one paragraph discussing how Cleopatra's character was, essentially, destroyed by historians like Plutarch -- who wrote from the point of the view of the winners, and of a man in a male-dominated patriarchal society. Use MLA formatting: including in-line/in-text citations, as well as a Works Cited page. You may use outside research sources for this assingment. The more effort you put into the extra credit, the more extra credit you will get. Paragraphs should be at least five full sentences.
