InstructionThis is an opportunity to get extra credit for watching a film and doing a report on it. Here are the parameters: Watch a film centered on one of the places and periods of history or one of the individuals we’re covering this semester in class. In other words, set in the ancient Near East, from prehistory, to Egypt in the time of the Roman conquest. And before you even ask, The Mummy is NOT appropriate for the assignment. Write a 3 page report, including: An introductory paragraph, including the title of the film, name of the director, major cast members, when it was released, why you chose to watch it, is this the first time you’ve watched this particular film, etc. A summary of the plot (1 - 3 paragraphs). 1-3 paragraphs discussing how the film compares with the reality of the historical period or individual -- are the details right, like costuming, setting, vernacular language. Are there anachronisms (for example, a visible cell phone or wrist watch in a film taking place in the ancient Near East). Is the history correct – for example, does Cleopatra die or does she win the war with Octavius? Does it match with what we’ve learned about this time period or this individual? Where does it differ? 1-2 paragraphs telling me what you thought about the film. Did you like it? Why? If not, why not? Did the film add to your understanding of the time period or individual, or did it muddy the historical waters, so to speak? The amount of work you put into the report will dictate how much extra credit you get for it. Use MLA formatting, including in-line/in-text citations, as well as a Works Cited page. You are allowed to use outside research sources for this assignment. It would be helpful for you to let me know your choice for a film in advance, so I can advise on your choice in general, or make suggestions.
