Research Paper Introduction: You will expand the first paragraph of your Short Essay as follows to form an introduction to your research paper: Introduce the related text in one or two sentences immediately after your first piece of analysis.. Who is the author? When was the text written? What was the historical context? How does the text relate to your topic? Then follow with a big question that incorporates your related text. Conclusion: Restate your overall claim at the end of your Short Essay. Restate the concluding sentence from your related text analysis paragraph--this sentence should make a clear claim about your topic Restate the concluding sentence from your Part 3 paragraph--this sentence should likewise make a clear claim about your topic. Compare your analysis of the novel overall and your analysis of the related text. What does a comparison of the novel and the related text reveal about your topic over all? Your final sentence or two should give an answer to your big question that builds on or complicates the answer you gave in your Short Essay. Title Give your research paper a title using the following format: [short quoted phrase from 1984]: [your topic] in George Orwell's 1984. See the model for an example of a title in this format. In-Text Citations: Now that you are using another text besides the novel, you will need to place the author’s last name before the page number in your citations so that your reader will know which text you are citing. Not only will you do this for your related text quotations, but you will also go back and include Orwell’s name along with the page number in your citations from 1984. Example: (Orwell 178). Works Cited Page: On a separate page after the last page of your paper, place the heading “Works Cited” at the top, and list the MLA citations of the novel and whatever related text you used in alphabetical order by the authors’ last names.
