The purpose of this assignment is for you to identify and attempt to explain psychological and sociological aspects of physical activity in the real world. If safe to do so take a “field trip” to a place in the community where physical activity is occurring (e.g., park, gym, health club, group fitness class, dance rehearsal or performance, sporting event or practice). Or you may watch a video recording of such an event. Your job is to simply observe the setting for at least 45 minutes. You should not be a participant in the setting, only an observer. Pay attention to the behaviors and body language of the participants (this could include coaches, parents, staff, or spectators), as well as any social interactions. Keep a log of what stands out to you. After the observation, write a paper that answers the following questions: What did you observe? Describe the scene (100-200 words). What 2 theories related to the psychology of physical activity (see list above) seemed to fit with what you observed? Explain (400-500 words). What 2 concepts, theories, or models related to the sociology of physical activity (like race, gender, class, weight bias, age bias, or ableism) seemed to fit with what you observed? Please make specific links to theories and research articles here. Explain (400-500 words). Based on what you have learned about the socio-psychological aspects of physical activity, evaluate the effectiveness of this setting for participants' satisfaction, development, and/or enjoyment. What was done well? What would you modify about the setting, the interactions, or anything else, to enhance participants’ opportunities, enjoyment, and personal progress?
