InstructionRe-read Chapters XVI (16)-XIX (19), Find one natural element of these chapters—for example the dell, the brook, the sun, the “fallen tree”—and write a paper on how this one element helps to define the relationships amongst Dimmesdale, Hester Prynne, and Pearl. In what psychic state do these characters enter these chapters—and in what state do they leave? What changes happen amongst these characters and how does that one natural element help to drive that change? Don’t do all of the elements—or the chapters as a whole—do 1 and only 1 element. Go deep on the language. Hawthorne is deep and rich, but so are we. Focus. Don’t do a plot summary. You could write this paper by examining 2 paragraphs. Look at the physical first—then if there is something symbolic going on, explain that. But start with the physical. Who is where and what are they doing? And how are they doing it? Hawthorne paid attention to his details, and so should we. Even one (1) image works. One action. One whatever. This is a biopsy not a body scan. No research required—though you will find some of the criticism at that back of our text useful. Note our text in your Works Cited page.
