Readers of the Old Testament are often surprised by the amount of violence and warfare that exists in these books, especially when contrasted to the New Testament. The books of Joshua and Judges contain many examples of violence and sacred warfare. Because some of this violence is commissioned directly by God, some readers struggle with these books. Read this week’s material on the book of Joshua, and then view the video entitled “Violence in the Old Testament: Seven Minute Seminary” at https://youtu.be/7hotJ7p0f9I?list=PL1CBE0DD656B9BC0F Reflecting on the video, do you agree or disagree with Professor Stone’s explanation for the many instances of war and violence in the Old Testament, specifically the instances found in Joshua and Judges? Why or why not? What problems or questions about violence in the Old Testament does Dr. Stone not address or resolve? Why do you think the question of violence in the Old Testament is important in the modern world? Your initial discussion post should be at least 250 words and is due on Wednesday evening. Be sure and respond to at least two of your fellow students (at least 100 words each) by Sunday night.
