Instruction
Experimental Designs and Causality Explain what is meant by a causal claim and what is it about experimental designs that allow the justification of a causal claim. The philosopher David Hume (for example) reports that we are never able to justify a causal claim (C CAUSES B) since all we can perceive is constant concurrence where instances of E have always followed instances of C. But this does not imply causality. For example, night has always followed day but we are not justified in saying that day causes night and one day this will not happen. In this post, defend the claim that only experimental designs can result in justifiable causal claims.

  • A causal claim indicates that one event is caused by another event or variable. In order to determine causality, experimental research must be completed. Experimental research can be used to indicate a relationship between variables and determine the “direction of causation” (Aaker et al., 2015). While the experimentation can be controlled to infer causality, it can never be completely proven. (Aaker et al., 2015). Experimental designs allow for the justification of a causal claim because they are able to control the variables. In a field experiment, for example, the researcher would introduce the variable in a natural setting and observe the impacts. Participants in this research would not even know they were participants. Due to the natural setting, however, the researcher has less control of the environment and the influence of other potential variables.

  • As such, the researcher must consider those other possibilities when reviewing the results. Laboratory experiments, however, are more controlled. The researcher would have greater control over the introduction of variables, but the response to those variables may not be a natural response. The researcher must consider if the field experiment would render the same results. It is for these reasons that a causal relationship cannot be proven, only inferred.

The results of descriptive research would paint a verbal picture of a lived experience but is not intended to look for impacts of and relationships between variables. As such, if a client or researcher is looking to determine causation, descriptive research will miss the mark.
