1) I chose to look at Target's online section for their personal care, and I was actually surprised with the organization and results I found. Going into this assignment I was expecting to see cosmetics mixed in with the personal care, which would cater this to the female gender; even though they can be for any gender, cosmetics are typically created with a more feminine and less masculine design. I started out by looking at the skincare section, which was all gender neutral and I didn't notice any products specifically labeled male or female. All the packaging was also gender neutral, and kept simple in appearance. One thing I did notice that created a double standard was the cosmetic section at target, because they have a section labeled "beauty for all" where a male, who is wearing makeup, is pictured with makeup products. But there is also a whole different section under beauty just for makeup, where all the models featured are female. I think this was weird because Target is trying to contribute to the makeup for all gender movement, but I don't think they should still have two different subcategories to do so. It was always been looked down upon for males to wear makeup, and when more males started going into the makeup industry they received a lot of hate, but as a result this has become more of a norm in society, and there are huge influencers in the beauty community now that are male. I think gender identity, or the way one identifies, shouldn't have any affect on the aisles or areas of stores they should shop in, and I think a lot of stores are trying to become more gender neutral but unfortuntely they aren't all quite there yet. 2) To analyze gender in personal care products I decided to venture to Rite Aid's website. I navigated to the personal care tab and clicked. I was immediately taken to a blush pink banner with the picture of a young lady smiling back at me. To which I thought this could probably be geared towards both men and women. As I scrolled down there were featured categories for oral care, adult incontinence and shaving. The shaving tab took me to a large variety of mens razors but zero for women. Thinking this was odd I went back to the main menu of personal care and continued to scroll. There were gender neutral packages of self tanner-plain white bottle with light blue writing, plan B contraception and home drug tests. There was a good selection of unisex items that included briefs for incontinence and reading glasses. The house brand mint dental floss was packaged in light purple and white and was geared towards women which I thought was unnecessary as it would easily be used for both sexes. Since packaging may effect a consumers choice I wanted to check the prices on razors to see if there was a double standard. The store brand women's disposable razors were 2.59 for a ten pack and the same store brand for men was 4.99 for a ten pack. I was surprised by this since we always hear about the feminine tax that falls on personal care products for women. Having looked at this website in a different way really gave me some insight as to how myself as a consumer is unknowingly influenced by the organization of a store and the packaging of products.
