Instruction********* If you want to be considered please indicate that you have read this with something specific from about --- more than "I read your instructions carefully." I need to be sure that the person that gets it isn't going to need to revise it several times as it is due tomorrow night. The essay is on the Criminal Minds TV show. PLEASE have watched Criminal Minds enough to use examples from it. The conclusion CANNOT be a restatement of the thesis! The purpose This paper will allow you to learn more about evaluations by discussing a work of art (such as a film, live performance, album, music video or painting) or a publicly-known, researchable ethical decision (such as whether a former Trump Administration official should be able to write a book detailing his or her time in the White House), discussing the criteria for what makes for a good work of art in the medium you’re considering or a sound ethical decision, and making an argument as to how your work of art or ethical decision meets or does not meet all three of your criteria. The suggested path 1. Include an introduction that establishes your voice, engages your audience, and identifies what artistic work or ethical decision, leading to a thesis addressing whether or not it meets your criteria. 2. Include a thesis about what you’re analyzing, what three criteria you’re using, and whether or not it meets the criteria. It’s best to think of it as a formula: X is or is not a good Y because of criteria A, B, and C. Example: I argue that Beyonce’s “Formation” is a good music video because it provides compelling visual images, helps the artist convey the song’s message, and highlights the artist’s performance. If you’re going the artistic route, you can choose a specific medium (such as a music album, movie, television series, painting, play, etc.) or a specific genre within a medium (such as a rap album, rom-com, animated series, Impressionist painting, etc.). If you’re going the ethical route, you can think about a choice that an individual public figure or a larger collective (like the Trump Administration or a company) has either made or must make. 3. Include a body paragraph, after the intro paragraph, discussing the criteria you’ve established for a good example of the medium or a good ethical choice. The criteria should apply to everything you consider to be a good example of the medium or genre (or ethical decision) you’re exploring, and it’s a good idea to establish the criteria before you write the other body paragraphs. (In our example, you’re considering what makes a good music video — as you develop each criterion, ask yourself, “Do all these very different videos, which I think are all good, share this criterion I’m considering?”) To use the formula, this is saying a good Y must have A, B, and C. 4. Include three body paragraphs, discussing how what you’re analyzing meets or does not meet each criterion, with one paragraph for each of the three criteria. So, X meets or does not meet criterion A in one paragraph, X meets or does not meet criterion B in another, and X meets or does not meet criterion C in another. Note that the artwork you’re evaluating (the X) should meet all three criteria (the A, B, and C) to be considered a good example of your genre or medium (the Y). 5. Include a conclusion paragraph that employs one of the recommended strategies for conclusions we’ve discussed in class. Format The paper should contain six paragraphs (apx. 200-250 words for each): 1. Intro Paragraph 2. Body Paragraph discussing Criteria 3, 4, 5. Body Paragraphs on Meeting Criteria 6. Conclusion Paragraph Sources You must use at least three sources, properly documented using MLA Style. (One source will be the artwork you’re analyzing, if you go that route.)
