InstructionCase Study Assignment As 21st century global citizens, we live in a world that is filled with complex communication challenges. We see this starkly and urgently with the recent national election, global pandemic, protests, and ongoing efforts for institutional reform to address structural inequities and racism here in the US and elsewhere. An understanding of how communication works can help us devise solutions to today’s pressing problems by advocating for change at the interpersonal and social level. Instructions For this assignment, you will compose a 4-5 page essay (not including the works cited page or any headers) that critically examines your own communication skills and practices, including areas that you might be able to actively engage with and improve. You will choose and describe one communication event from your own life directly related to your experiences with COVID-19 and/or structural racism that challenged your ability to communicate well with a person or group of people who are important to you or that offer an example of challenging communication patterns. A communication event is a contained unit of communication (e.g., a meeting at work or school, a phone call with a friend or boss, a public event, a date, a conversation with a parent over dinner, a conversation with an advisor, friend, or colleague, a protest, a debate, etc.). Here are the details: 1) First, develop a brief, 1-paragraph introduction that (a) sets the scene, (b) offers a roadmap for your paper, and (c) presents a thesis statement. This is the "so what" factor of the paper -- what we will learn from your analysis. 2) Now, briefly describe your communication even and analyze it by using concepts that we have learned thus far in this course. In your analysis, you will define and apply at least four communication concepts from your textbook (hint: check the back of each chapter for a list of key terms). Be sure to take care to pose questions to yourself as you organize and write your paper that interrogate your own belief systems -- we all have them, and examining what informs them is an important communicative practice. If you were a participant, you will ask yourself about your own participation. If you were an observer, you will ask yourself about your preconceived responses. 3) In your conclusion, reflect on how you aim to improve your communication with others by offering a detailed description that includes strategies that you have learned in this course. Be sure to link the ways your own individual actions reflect/contribute to our shared world. Additional Information: COM 2000 is certified as a Global Citizens Course and may be used to fulfill partial requirements of the Global Citizens Awards upon successful completion of the course and (final grade B or higher).
