Original Post (~400 words) Much has been written about the dire fate of the Amazon and what that means for the future of the entire planet. Most frequently the Amazon, the world's biggest surviving tropical rainforest, is treated as "natural." Many critics believe it is best left alone, untouched by humans other than the primitive indigenous inhabitants who seem to be "frozen in time." For your original post (300-400 words): •Briefly summarize, in 2-3 sentences, your understanding of the role of the "health" of the Amazon basin in global climate patterns, and what it means to have reached a "tipping point." •Then explain how archaeological research has revealed previous uses of the rain forest after about AD 1000 that allowed for tremendous population growth and regional anthropogenic "built" landscapes, including patterned geoglyphs and roads. What did the indigenous inhabitants do that not only increased the sustainability of their way of life, but allowed for very large populations? What difference did it make that they operated knowledgeably to manage landscapes within a huge region — a macro-scale — and not just the microscale area limited to their villages? •Explain how the past actions of the Xinguano (Kuikuru) people (who were very "unfrozen") may provide lessons for utilizing the rainforest in the present, in ways that are less destructive and more sustainable for the future. • •Briefly (2-3 sentences) indicate why it is important to interact with the living indigenous peoples to better understand their dynamic historical relationships with their environment, and what they think about the changes they see happening to the rainforest now. •Finally, briefly (2-3 sentences), using information learned in this module or previous ones, compare the Amazon case to another place in the world where peoples of the past responded — successfully or unsuccessfully — to climate change.
