PROGRAM DESIGN ASSIGNMENTS. These assignments are geared to help you think logically and methodically about the development of a social work program within an agency. Each assignment builds on the other. Together they apply the generalist problem solving method in creating programs that promote social and economic justice. Each Program Design Assignment is worth 12.5% each or 75% of the total grade. Details for each assignment will be provided. The student will select a program to develop based on their interest, field placement or workplace experience. Each of these steps are part of the final grant proposal. Students will have an opportunity to revise each of the assignments once and then again before the final grant proposal is turned in at the end of the semester. Assignment One : Introduction and Problem Statement/Needs Assessment • This assignment has two steps. First, write an introduction to the agency/organization that is proposing a new program. Include the mission of the agency and any expertise/experience the agency has in working with the issue or the population. Help the reader get to know the agency. Second, create a Problem Statement that convinces the reader that a problematic condition exists for a certain population. Identify and describe the social problem/condition that your program will be addressing. 2-3 pages plus references. Grade will be based on • discussing both the organization and the community based problem – 15 pts • clear organization of material - 5 pts Assignment 1b. Needs Assessment - strong documentation, ie statistics and research, of the social problem condition you are addressing. Using a community assessment and research findings, present evidence that shows the normative, perceived, expressed, or relative need. 3-5 pages plus references. – 100 pts Grade is based on: • Selection of appropriate needs assessment tool • Community Need assessment completed with interpretation of findings • Discussion of identified need to address the targeted problem with selection of appropriate grant and or service intervention to address the problem Assignment Two : Hypothesis, Goals and Objectives(12.5%) Identify your hypothesis ie, how best to address this challenge based on the evidence based research you identified in Assignment One. Then identify a major goal(s) for the program and measurable objectives that promote social and economic justice. 2-3 pages Grade will be based on • naming and providing an overview of the program – 3 pts • clearly identifying the if/then hypothesis, - 3 pts • clearly identifying goals and objectives – 6.5pts Assignment Three : Logic Mode Create the logic model of the program design including inputs, process, outputs, long and short-term outcomes, impact. 1 page Grade will be based on Well conceptualized and detailed description of the program’s logic model: – 2 pts for each component. Assignment Four : Flowchart / Mgt Info 1. Create a flowchart of activities for the client. 2. Identify the management information needed to track your outcomes including the diversity of program clients and program staff. 2 pages. Grade will be based on  Clarity of flowchart activities – 6 pts  Clear identification of mgt information to track inputs, throughputs, outputs and outcomes = 6.5 pts Assignment Five : Evaluation Describe the type of evaluation needed (effort, cost efficiency, outcome, cost effectiveness or impact). Choose at least two types and detail data needed to to assess program effectiveness and ethical accountability. 2-5 pages. Grade will be based on • identification of types of evaluation – 3 pts • identification of evaluation components – 10.5 • Assignment Six : Budget Create a draft line-item budget for your program with narrative. You can use the example on page 231 of the text as a guide. 2-3 pages. Grade will be based on: • Does the budget match the program needs? - 7 pts • Is the budget based on reasonable costs? – 3 pts • Is it balanced between expenses and income? 2.5 pts PROGRAM FUNDING ASSIGNMENT Complete a grant proposal to fund the program that you have been developing. The grant proposal is a compilation of the six proceeding steps. The student should revise previous steps so they are strong, clear and interesting to the reader. The student should format the proposal so that it looks professional and follows the grantor’s request. The grant should include a cover letter and letters of support. A model proposal has been provided to use as a guide. 7-12 pages. Grade is based on • All 11 components included: Cover Letter, Summary, Introduction, Problem Statement, Goal/Objectives, Project Description, Evaluation, Future Funding, Budget/Narrative, References, Letter of Support 80 pts • Strong, clear presentation for each element – 10 pts. • Well edited for grammar and spelling – 10 pts
