InstructionFor this paper you will analyze Tartuffe by applying the philosophy of Mary Wollstonecraft in The Vindication of the Rights of Woman with in-text citations. Introduction: Your introduction should provide 1. brief orienting information (titles, authors, countries, dates) on both texts and 2. a thesis statement that answers the following questions: In what ways do Molière and Wollstonecraft agree? In what ways do they disagree? (You may wish to consider both the role of women in the family and the role of the king in the state.) Body: In the body of your paper, you should support your argument by 1. Summarizing the relevant portions of the Wollstonecraft selection. Be specific. Optional: You may also discuss Rousseau’s Émile. 2. Choosing 2 or 3 separate passages from Tartuffe. Do the passages illustrate Wollstonecraft’s concerns? How so? Do they make an argument that opposes hers? How? 3. For your most important quotes and passages, make sure to use direct quotes from the text and cite them according to MLA. This paper should respond to Tartuffe and Mary Wollstonecraft. Optionally, you may also include discussion of Rousseau’s Émile. You do not need to consult any sources outside of our textbook. Your paper should be a minimum of 1500 words, which is 5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, with standard margins. Papers that are four and a bit will lose points for length. Papers that do not reach four pages will be returned ungraded. Your paper must have an MLA Works Cited that gives bibliographic information for the texts you are discussing, along with in-text citations. Write for an audience of your classmates and me. This means that you may assume your readers are familiar with the readings. It is not necessary (or desirable) to explain or summarize the entire story.
