Project Summary: Your work in the global industry will require interactions that will take place in many different cultural settings. Successful interaction in a cross-cultural setting is dependent upon your ability to learn about and integrate your understanding of cultural differences. Communication, behaviors, customs, and beliefs will vary with each culture you encounter. Understanding the ethical position of individuals from another part of the world can only come after youve begun to learn about cultural differences. In this assignment, you will explore different cultural perspectives in more detail. Assume you will be attending an elegant dinner where invited guests will come from all over the world. Attendees from China, the United Kingdom, and France are sure to be seated at your table. Luckily, you will not need to brush up on your language skills, as all attending will be speaking English. But you will need to become aware of cultural differences so you do not find yourself in an awkward position during the meal. Instructions Prepare for your interaction with the other individuals at your table to complete this assignment by doing the following (1-2 paragraphs per question): Choose two foreign countries. Research each of the two countries you have chosen and make note of the following information: What to expect when greeting an individual (10 points total 5 points for each country) What to expect when dining with each individual (10 points total 5 points for each country) Topics of conversation you should probably avoid during the meal (because they may be offensive in light of cultural differences, not simply because they represent distasteful dinner conversation) (10 points total 5 points for each country) Behaviors or gestures that mean something differently than you might expect in the United States (10 points total 5 points for each country) A summary of common customs or beliefs of people found in those countries (20 points total 10 points for each country) Respond to the following questions regarding the information you have found: Where did you go to find your information? What sources did you use, and why do you feel they were appropriate? (5 Points) What information did you find that was surprising or different from any perceptions you may have had before completing your research? (5 Points) How would having cultural understanding help you interact with the other people at your table? (10 Points) Why is understanding others cultural differences important when discussing ethical questions? In other words, how are the two issues related and how can cultural understanding help you make ethical decisions? (15 Points) Compile the information you have found on each country and the answers to the questions in a single document. The information and answers should be easily identifiable on the document. You can choose to present it as a narrative report or simply use headings, lists, and a question/answer style format. You must, however, represent the information clearly. (5 Points for clarity)
