Project Summary: Philosophy Essay A young person is facing a moral dilemma. Their country is involved in a military action in a foreign nation, and they have been conscripted by the government for the war effort. Unfortunately, their mother is suffering from a terminal illness, and she has no other family. The person and their mother, with whom they still live, are very poor, and a soldiers salary will not be sufficient to pay for the care that the mother requires. If the person leaves, she will definitely die alone and in great pain in their small apartment, without the medical or palliative care required to aid and comfort her. The question is; what should the person do in this situation? Should they go and fight, or should they stay home and care for his mother? (these, by the way, are the only alternatives) The above scenario is derived from a hypothetical example used by the famous twentieth century philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre to illustrate what he took to be a practical ethical dilemma that could not be resolved by reference to any ethical theory. Is he right? Show us how you believe a Utilitarian and a Kantian would approach and attempt to resolve this dilemma. Also: evaluate the competing positions, with regard to their ability to respond to this particular dilemma which approach do you think is better in dealing with this particular dilemma, and why? Be sure to cite textual evidence from the readings to support your claims. Click here to learn how to cite your evidence. Your paper should be one typewritten page.
