Project Summary: Essays: Two, ~12% of course grade each. This class will be discovery-oriented, which means that we wont know exactly what its going to be about until we get into the discovery process. Our first focus will be 1915, an interesting year. Well start by seeing what resources the course texts offer for beginning to understand what was going on in the world in 1915, then branch out into some aspect of 1915 that youll get curious about, research in depth, and write a paper on. In the second half of the term youll divide up into research teams focused on 1815, 1715, 1615, or 1515, then write a paper about your year that relates to your first paper somehow. The final paper will put the first two together and transform them by developing the connection, whatever it is. You should think about the semester as developing a research expertise through three stages. orld History 2 The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking about history as a laboratory of human behavior and interaction. To succeed you will need to develop and improve your abilities to identify and make the most of resources; gather, sift, categorize, and prioritize information; and distinguish between fact and interpretation in order to make an informed and compelling analysis. Much of your grade will depend on how well you work independently within general guidelines; how effectively you adopt and adapt course instruction to your own work; how widely you seek relevant information within and outside the course texts; how thoughtfully you focus your essays; and how effectively you relate your specific focus to more general contexts, issues and perspectives. The first paper will start to be due after about a month. It will be your midterm grade. We will workshop it in class. The second paper will start to be due after about two months.
