Project Summary: Case Study Content --- The “Slave Narrative” was a popular form of literature in which which formerly enslaved people (usually fugitives) published dramatic accounts of their life as slaves. Encouraged and often funded in part by northern abolitionists, these narratives helped over time turn some whites against slavery and to sympathize with enslaved African Americans. They also, of course, serve as valuable sources for historians to better understand the enslaved experience. The document I am posting below includes sections directly sampled from three of the most popular and influential slave narrators: Henry Bibb, Solomon Northup, and Harriet Jacobs.
