Project Summary: - Steve Biko was a young leader of the resistance against the racist apartheid government in South Africa who was murdered in 1977 by the police while in detention. Biko believed in “Black consciousness” —which was his strategy to raise Black pride in order to fight White Supremacy. - When Thomas Sankara came to power in Upper Volta in 1983 he was determined to break his country’s dependence on France and other Western countries. By the time he was murdered in 1987 Sankara had accomplished many of his goals. Sankara also faced some challenges from certain quarters and eventually he paid the ultimate price—with his life.
