Project Summary: you will survey the circumstances and consequences of modernism and modernist advances within the context of the Great War, or World War I. This war was called the War to End All Wars because of its extreme loss of life and destruction. In its aftermath, artists and thinkers launched new ways of seeing the world. In this unit, you will learn about this war and its impact. You will see the changes in fields of art, literature, cinema, and music. For instance, the Dadaist artwork by Marcel Duchamp exhibited here demonstrates the attempt to react to an incomprehensible war in a meaningless way. The events of World War I transpired in a modernist world. Modernism set the stage for the machine e.g., the steam engine, the train, the automobile, and the airplane and these innovations inspired speed, mobility, and technological advances. These advances also enhanced militaristic defense and offense. The consequences were disastrous. You will survey the global impact that modernism and the Great War had on the arts. The war challenged the imaginative spirit, as artists attempted to deal with its psychological effects. Scientists and thinkers worked to understand the workings of war-traumatized minds. For this, you will travel to Vienna, Austria, to meet Sigmund Freud, whose work on the human psyche is still debated today
