Project Summary: HIPAA is a legislative milestone in support of patient privacy issues. There are several facets of the Act, but the most widely publicized sections deal with the patient's right to privacy. The Act provides for a degree of control, allowing patients to determine who can access their records. Patients must provide specific authorization for the use and dissemination of the information contained in the medical record. Critical Thinking: Laura, a patient, is concerned about the number of staff employed by the facility at which she is seen who are allowed to access her healthcare information. For instance, all nurses have access to health information of all patients. Is this a good policy? Why or why not? Should all physicians have access to all patient records? What about other staff that must see this information as part of their work? Why or why not?
