Project Summary: **The Trial of Socrates: The Student’s Verdict In the Apology of Socrates, Socrates claims that his guilty verdict was the result of him not having had enough time to adequately defend himself and philosophy. The time constraints imposed upon him at trial, in his reasoning, made a proper defense of philosophy impossible. On the other side, even though his accusers ultimately prevailed, Socrates exposed many inconsistencies in their logic. It is clear that the position of each side could have been strengthened and improved. Having now read both Apology and Republic, Students have had time to think about the Socratic way life and what, if any, contributions such a life might provide the individual or the state. In Assignment # 1, students have the opportunity to voice their perspective on the value of the philosophical way of life.
