Project Summary: Last week, we looked at the very technical side of essay writing. This week, I’m asking you to consider something a little more complicated; that is, we are going to look at the role, function, and craft of the writer. In part 4, Zinsser discusses the attitude of the writer. For our truncated study, we are going to examine three of the principles discussed. The first is the voice of the writer. We have all read those great writers whose voice, on the page, come alive in our imagination. It is almost like you can hear them talk. We have also read those writers whose work is so boring that we are painfully aware, word after word, that we are reading. Second, Zinsser addresses the idea of a writer’s attitude. As in all things, writing is painfully honest about the writer’s attitude. As readers, we can tell when a writer is having fun, just trying to get by, or simply phoning it in. Finally, Zinsser hits on the key to good writing, doing the best you can. It is important that writers write
