Project Summary: After completing this exercise, the participant should: 1. understand the concepts and the calculation of proportionate mortality ratio (PMR) and standardized mortality ratio (SMR); 2. be able to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the retrospective cohort study design; 3. understand the concept of, and be able to calculate, person-years at risk; 4. be familiar with the issues involved in selecting an appropriate study population.
