Project Summary: To prepare for this assessment, complete the following: Research the principles of art and design: movement, unity, harmony, variety, balance, proportion, pattern, rhythm, contrast, and repetition. Choose two that you would like to explore in this assessment. Consider the following word pairings. Choose two pairings that you would like to explore in this assessment. Hard and calm. Soft and dynamic. Vibrant and thoughtful. Directions Create a design for each word pairing that applies the selected principles of design. Concentrate on how best to apply the selected principles of design to enhance the concepts in your selected word pairings. Consider the best possible ways to represent the words visually. The words are opposite (or nearly so) in meaning, and so they lend themselves to compelling visual solutions. Brainstorm possibilities and create multiple drafts as you work to create the most effective solution. Remember, there is not one correct answer or solution; there are simply more effective and less effective visual solutions. Your goal is to create the most effective and visually compelling design. Take a look at the Design Example linked in the Resources. In this example, the forms and shapes are simple non-representational shapes. The designer did not rely on representational drawings or symbols to reflect the word pairs. The shapes and their organization contribute to the success of this example. Design Requirements Be sure to meet the following requirements as you complete your assessment: Use only simple geometric shapes and lines. Do not use photographic, symbolic, or representational elements. Removing imagery allows us to focus specifically on the principles instead of concerns of representation of the natural world. Your designs must be created using black, white, and a variety of gray-colored objects or areas. Do not use color. Save design files in JPEG or PDF format for submission. Include a description for each design that identifies the word pairs used, defines the principles of design used, and explains how you used them to meet the assessment requirements. Include a self-critique, describing the evolution of your work from concept through revisions. Options for Drawing Most electronic drawing applications provide the option to save your work as a JPEG file, and you will need to choose a software program with this option to complete your course project. Windows users may consider using the Microsoft Paint program. Mac users may consider using OmniGraffle, a diagram application that comes bundled with the operating system. Using Microsoft PowerPoint is a good option for either Windows or Mac users, as it allows you to create graphics on individual slides and save your designs in JPEG format. If you do not have access to a drawing application, you may draw your designs on paper and scan your projects into the computer to be converted into JPEG format for submission. This option requires access to a scanner. If you do not have a scanner, you can go to a local printing and photocopy service to have your projects scanned.
